Scholarships For Students – Scholarship Program Overview

The application for the Excelsior Scholarship Program is now underway. Eligibility is based upon the student’s educational level, and financial need. An applicant should: be a U.S. national or a qualified non-resident of NYS and have lived in NYS for at least 12 consecutive months before the application date. For a student who has not been in the U.S. for at least three full calendar years, he or she may still be eligible, but their chances are greatly reduced. Applicants are expected to fill out the FAFSA online, using the proper forms, and submit it to the appropriate office.

The Excelsior Scholarship Program supports Latinx, Caribbean, Hispanic, Native American, Asian, and Pacific Islander students with high academic achievement, advanced scientific interests, and creative talents. There are two types of Excelsior Scholarships. The first is the Excelsior Summer Program, which provides funding for high school students as they complete their summers away from home and school. The second is the Excelsior Senior Scholars Program, which supports students who are pursuing senior year at an institution of higher learning in the U.S., or are enrolled full time in a college or university in the United States, and are not pursuing summer courses. Both types of Excelsior Scholarship are expected to be awarded in spring.

The Excelsior Scholarship Program encourages highly talented students to pursue graduate and post-graduate studies at major research centers in the United States. Applicants can apply for multiple grants, and there is a long list of institutions that participate. Some of these centers are involved in numerous research collaborations. For example, NASA, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation have received funding from the scholarship program. In addition, the program supports women and underrepresented minorities, and people from economically and socially disadvantaged areas. To be eligible for one of these scholarships, applicants must fulfill academic achievements requirements. In addition to academic achievement requirements, financial need requirements may also apply. Students who do not meet financial need requirements may apply for a supplemental scholarship program. Eligibility for either scholarships requires proof of financial need.

Students interested in applying for these scholarships should review eligibility criteria. Eligibility criteria vary from scholarship program to program. Most programs provide some financial aid for low and middle income families, while others provide all the financial aid necessary for a student to attend college and earn a degree. The programs awarding scholarships for students with exceptional academic achievement are much more selective. Some examples of these selective scholarships are the SAT scholarship program, which awards over one million dollars in scholarship money annually to over one hundred thousand high school seniors.

Scholarship programs for higher education are designed to help students gain admittance to accredited universities. There are also other types of scholarships for higher education. For example, there are federal student assistance programs that award money to students with disabilities. There are also state-funded scholarship programs providing cash awards to students attending colleges in low-income areas. Students who demonstrate good community attendance and participation in extracurricular activities may be eligible for college funding.
